Backed By the IoT: A Day in the Life of a Facility Manager

If you combine the day-in-the-life experiences of many facility managers (FMs) who use Monnit IoT Solutions, you will arrive at the following collective recap.
It's worth a review to realize the valuable benefits you can achieve daily when the Internet of Things (IoT) supports your work.
Overall, FMs typically spend their day monitoring building systems via a facilities maintenance management system (FMMS) dashboard, analyzing sensor data for potential issues, and responding to alerts while striving to optimize performance and efficiency.
Here are most of an FM's favorite Monnit Wireless, Wi-Fi, and Power over Ethernet (PoE) Sensors that make smart facility management happen:
- ALTA®, Next™, or PoE•X™ Temperature Sensors
- ALTA, Next, or PoE•X Humidity Sensors
- ALTA or PoE•X Duct Temperature Sensors
- ALTA, Next, or PoE•X Water Detection Sensors
- ALTA, Next, or PoE•X Open-Closed Sensors
- ALTA, Next, or PoE•X Motion Detection Sensors
- ALTA Smart MultiStage Thermostats
- ALTA Single and Three-Phase Current Meters
A summary of an FM's daily responsibilities and how sensor data supports their role:
Morning
- Team Check-In—Review reports and dashboards for facility status.
- Analyze Sensor Data—Compare against temperature, humidity, energy and facility use, water and pest intrusion, and system performance KPIs.
- Tackle Urgent Issues—Respond to sensor alerts about equipment or conditions.
- Revise Day/Week Plan—Prioritize and coordinate maintenance, contractors, and tasks.

Afternoon
- Analyze Trends—Use iMonnit charts, reports, and other data analytics tools to identify patterns and potential issues before they escalate.
- Optimize Operations—Implement changes based on data-driven insights to improve efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and enhance the overall facility environment.
- Stakeholder Communication—Update management, tenants, departments, and other stakeholders on facility performance, issues, and predictive maintenance.
- Vendor and Contractor Coordination—Ensure they perform timely maintenance, repairs, and upgrades.
- Team Management—Develop a resilient and agile FM team.
Evening
- Prepare for Tomorrow—Review tasks, schedule maintenance, and verify all systems are operational.
- Professional Development—Get updates on FM technologies and best practices.
- Leverage Data—Use sensor and systems data to make informed decisions about facility operations, maintenance, and upgrades.
- Sustainability and ESG Integration—Make decisions about sustainability and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.
With the right sensors in the right places, FMs can know what's happening inside and outside their facilities—even instantly, remotely, and at night.
It's clear from the above details that for facility managers to be successful each day, they must rely on IoT sensor data. Nearly every responsibility and task requires data analysis to make the best decisions.

A High-Performing Data Center Hinges on Stable Conditions

Data center infrastructure performance and condition data are as important as the business-critical applications and systems you manage. Environmental and facility condition monitoring with IoT sensors helps predict maintenance, prevent downtime, and optimize sustainability.
Without real-time insights, costly failures can go unnoticed, impacting operations, security, and compliance. Monnit IoT Sensors continuously monitor key conditions like temperature, humidity, water intrusion, power, and HVAC performance.
By tracking these parameters, data center and server room facility managers can detect anomalies early, enabling proactive maintenance, reducing risk, and extending equipment life. Real-time alerts via text, email, or voice call ensure immediate response to critical changes.
Comprehensive Monitoring
Monnit Sensors cover essential data center conditions:
- Temperature & Humidity: Maintain ASHRAE-recommended environmental conditions to prevent overheating and condensation.
- Water Detection: Prevent damage from plumbing leaks and cooling system failures with Water Puck, Water Rope, and Water Detect Sensors.
- HVAC Performance: Optimize system efficiency using duct temperature, air velocity, differential air pressure, etc. monitoring.
- Security & Power Monitoring: Detect unauthorized access, open doors, and abnormal power consumption to protect IT assets.
Risk Mitigation & Sustainability
IoT sensors enhance energy efficiency, reduce waste, and help data centers comply with sustainability regulations. Organizations leveraging real-time data optimize resource allocation, reduce operational costs, and strengthen infrastructure resilience. Predictive insights allow IT teams to prevent system failures, reduce downtime, and maintain continuity.
The IoT transforms data center management by making critical conditions talk. Monnit Sensors deliver actionable intelligence that supports data-driven decision-making and long-term strategic planning. The result? Improved uptime, optimized expenses, and peace of mind.

How to Automate Power with an ALTA Control Unit

Our ALTA® 10, 15, and 30 Amp Wireless Control Units sync with ALTA Wireless Sensors, an ALTA or ALTA XL® Gateway, and iMonnit to power on or off various devices, such as HVAC systems, greenhouse vents and fans, equipment, and machines.
You can automate many processes by combining the capabilities of our ALTA Control Units and Sensors.
Each ALTA Control Unit’s two relays can be controlled automatically by any wireless sensor or a group of sensors. Simply set parameters or conditions in iMonnit using the Rules feature to automate relay switching and control the power of many processes and equipment.
This Monnit Knowledgebase article walks you through an example of configuring an ALTA Control Unit in iMonnit. You’ll learn:
- The steps to configure the Rules
- How the Rules will work
Get a glimpse of what it’s like configuring just one relay to power a fan on and off when certain conditions occur. It’s easy to see how helpful our ALTA Control Units can be when working in tandem with our ALTA Sensors.
